What is Robotic Surgery and How Does it Work?
The da Vinci® Robotic System
With the da Vinci Surgical System, surgeons operate through just a few small incisions. The da Vinci System features a magnified 3D high-definition vision system and tiny wristed instruments that bend and rotate far greater than the human hand. As a result, da Vinci enables your surgeon to operate with enhanced vision, precision and control.
The da Vinci System represents the latest in surgical and robotics technologies. Your surgeon is 100% in control of the da Vinci System at all times. da Vinci technology translates your surgeon’s hand movements into smaller, precise movements of tiny instruments inside your body.

Breast
According to the American Cancer Society, almost 6,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in Arizona this year. From the moment a woman is faced with the news of an abnormal mammogram, it is impossible not to feel a great deal of anxiety and uncertainty. What stage is my cancer in, what treatments do I need to have, and what side effects can I expect are common concerns from newly-diagnosed breast cancer patients.
Having a team of physicians and breast cancer experts focused on you from that moment, being your guide with the decision-making and ensuring the most collaborative care with all treatment options available, is the best start. At Alliance Surgery Arizona, we work closely with both medical oncology and radiation oncology to determine the best course of treatment for each breast cancer patient. All services and treatments can be done locally, from imaging, biopsies, surgical procedures, radiation/oncology visits, and long-term follow up.
Most women with breast cancer have some type of surgery as part of their treatment. The goal of surgical care of breast cancer is to remove the disease with the least amount of disturbance to the body. There are different types of breast surgery, and it may be done for different reasons, depending on the situation.
At Alliance Surgery Arizona we offer:
Core Needle Biopsy – Standard way to diagnose, or rule out, breast cancer. A hollow needle is used to remove samples of tissue from the breast and a pathologist studies these samples under a microscope to see if they contain cancer.
Excisional Breast Biopsy – – Procedure that removes a noncancerous tumor, such as a fibroadenoma, from the breast.
Lumpectomy – Sometimes call breast-conserving surgery, a lumpectomy is an operation to remove breast cancer while leaving as much normal breast as possible. Some surrounding healthy tissue and lymph nodes are usually also removed, with how much of the breast being removed depending on the size and location of the tumor. It is often an option for women with early-stage cancer.
Mastectomy – A surgery which removes the breast tissue, nipple, and areola, but not all the lymph nodes.
Nipple-Sparing Mastectomy – Removal of the breast due to breast cancer or as a preventative measure known as risk reduction surgery. Through a small incision, all of the breast glandular tissue is removed from beneath the overlying skin and nipple.
Modified Radical Mastectomy – A surgery that removes the entire breast, including the breast tissue, skin, areola, nipple, and most of the underarm lymph nodes.
After surgery, Dr. Mourelo and his team will assist you in the next step of your personalized treatment plan by making sure you get the right information you need regarding radiation and medical oncology treatments.
